| - Elmwood has been my go-to spa for the past few years but may be time for a change. I have found in the past that the Elmwood is reasonably priced but on my most recent visit this past weekend, I think the prices may have gone up ($163 with tax for 50 minute aromatherapy massage), which makes the spa's price point similar to other spas with more updated facilities.
The spa itself is nice but could use renovations. The change rooms are filled with Moroccan Oil products and hair dryers, irons, etc. so I always look forward to a nice shower after services. The lockers on the other hand, are so tiny that I needed two to fit my purse, jacket and small bag with a change of clothes. There is a hot tub in the middle of the change room which is good for women who do not want to use the co-ed facilities but always seemed awkward and out of place to me. I hear there is a sauna in the men's change room.
The water therapies could use a renovation. The hot tub is tiny and there is hardly any seating near the pool. I saw couples sharing seats this past weekend. There should be some more seating and perhaps a sauna or a second hot tub to accommodate for peak times at the spa. There is a menu where you can order food but I've never seen wait staff frequent the area so would be nice if there was more attentive service to order a drink or food while enjoying the water therapies.
I really enjoyed my massage (as I usually do at the Elmwood). It was complete with hot towels, mint-scented creams, and heating pads. The RMT provided personalized service and was quick to adjust the treatment to my liking. He even remembered me from two years ago which was very impressive!
It would have been helpful if the eatheticians/RMT had known my itinerary because I had my massage and facial scheduled back-to-back and the massage started a few minutes late and I had to ask the time to ensure I was not late to the facial. The services were on different floors so it made it quite rushed to get from treatment to treatment. It would have also been nice if there a new robe waiting for me in the treatment rooms since like many guests, I went to the water therapies first and was wearing a wet bathing suit.
I had my first facial at the spa this past visit. I have sensitive skin and requested that only sensitive products be used. After a few minutes of the treatment beginning, I felt my face start to burn. I told the esthetician that my face was burning and felt it was not taken seriously. I have had terrible reactions when the wrong products are used so I wanted to ensure they were actually using sensitive products. The esthetician claimed she was using the only products the spa had to offer. Ten minutes into the treatment, I explained that my face was still burning and I wanted to speak to a manager. The manager was extremely professional and provided another line of products for the esthetician to use during the treatment. My skin felt great after that but I was upset that the matter had to escalate to a manger getting involved and also the esthetician should have known there was another set of products available for use. Of course, the incident of calling a manager robbed me of 10 minutes of the treatment that was not tacked on at the end. The rest of the treatment was relaxing and included a hand and foot massage, lip mask and eye treatment.
At check out, I was surprised that the manager had not informed the front desk of the incident. Rather, I had to explain the situation and asked if something could be done. They offered to discount the facial by 15% which is better than nothing but felt annoyed that I had to ask for something to be done to account for the interruption in the treatment.
Overall, the Elmwood is a convenient and enjoyable spa but think after this past incident that I will be ready to try a new spa next time.
