| - Ahhh just what the doctor ordered - a prescription for well priced ($8-$9) and deliciously mixed martinis. Also, amazing grilled cheese sandwiches and mac&cheese plates just in case of an overdose.
You'll find a modern-hip décor, bartenders who know what they're doing, deliciously crafted drinks, upbeat smooth-electro and good-looking young professional types (with the city's classier university students peppered throughout). Although the crowd leans slightly towards the hipster end of things, it's mostly made up of cool, well-dressed people with a penchant for eye-glasses with thick plastic rims.
Baldwin is small and that's awesome. No huge box-bar, no riff raff. But its size, when coupled with its popularity, creates a fuller and louder atmosphere as the night progresses. Be prepared for some slight push'n'shove but know that it's all part of the experience. Or get there early and snag a banquette. But that's less cool. Unless you get a bottle.
Also, Baldwin is good to smokers. Not only will you find heating lamps outside during winter, but you're also welcomed to wrap yourself in a thick cot hanging from the roof's ledge. Oh, and you'll be doing it in style - the blankets have a winter fashion-approved plaid pattern. Yeah baby.
Really, this place has become a Montreal staple. It's "happening" on every night of the week, but Thursday - the bar's most hectic night - is the best. It gets packed with 25-35 year-olds ready to start, continue, or end their night out. Baldwin is good for all of it.
