  • Until this restaurant starts taking seriously the problem of people using the handicapped parking space in front of their business as "I'm just running in for a second, no big deal," I'm not coming here anymore. I've talked to the people who work at this business several times about this but nothing ever seems to change and they don't take it seriously. I'm sitting outside right now looking at a warning sign that a vehicle could be towed and their gigantic handicapped reserved sign for the space but none of that seems to deter the extremely selfish undergraduates who continually park here. I've contacted the city about this and they said that the only way that anything can be done about this is if the business owners themselves do something about it. Calls by patrons to the police are therefore useless. I've attempted to talk to people who park in this parking space and usually the reaction ranges between complete apathy and actual anger and ugliness on the part of the offender. It's mind bending to me that people behave this way, but it's up to the owner and employees of the restaurant to enforce the fact that the handicapped parking space is required by law, is next to the front door because otherwise it would put someone needing to use the yellow lined space next to it in danger if they had to maneuver using a smaller space around the side of the building, and that the yellow lines are not just empty space to use at whim, either. The people who do this are all able-bodied and young. It's obvious that they really don't care, nor do the owners. Imagine it this way: what if anybody of African American heritage had to pay a fee, or found that there was some special password that they had to know in order to enter the establishment, and that otherwise they would have to park 2 blocks away, wait 20 extra minutes for their food, or something along those lines? People would be up in arms because that's obviously racist. But since this concerns the disabled who usually are treated as invisible, the owners and employees of this business seem not to care. This is ableist. When these selfish undergraduates park even for 5 minutes in this space it sends the message to anybody who might be disabled wanting to park in front of the business and enter that their needs are not important because the business is not truly committed to accessibility, and that they are basically not welcome at this establishment. I've been living in Champaign for 4 years and have brought this up continually and nothing has ever been done about it. Horrible.
