Man I love the Union Grill. This unassuming little place in Oakland is one of the best, most consistent restaurants in town. It's nothing fancy. I wouldn't go here for an anniversary dinner. But for what it is and its price range you can't beat it. Everything on the menu is good to outstanding. I know because I've had everything on the menu through the years. It does change slightly over time, which is nice to keep it fresh, but once in awhile you lose an old favorite. The turkey burger (far and away the best one in town) was recently removed for example.
I can't recommend this place enough. Two people can have a full dinner with an appetizer and a bottle of wine (10 dollar wine list is awesome) and get out of there for under 50 (before tip). Go-to menu items include all the salads, burgers, and fish tacos. The tuna sandwich is also one of the best in town. I'm not as big a fan of the famous turkey devonshire, but for what it is, it's good.
My only real gripe is the recent interior paint job. It's a light green now. It looks similar to the primer we used to use on the ship in the Navy. Very institutional looking.
Get there!
