| - I really have to give a shout-out to this museum for making it beyond easy to bring our 100+ group of students for a summer field trip. Normally the only place we bring our rowdy bunch is to the zoo, but we are always on the lookout for other opportunities in the Cleveland area. Now, when I browsed Cleveland History Center, "kid friendly" was not the first thing that popped into my head. In fact, it was probably the opposite of what I was going for. I could just imagine all my second and third graders running their hands over the historic cars and knocking historical artifacts over. Suffice it to say, it wasn't quite the disaster I was imagining, and our student group actually had a great time! We had not one, but two docents to greet us right before we even walked in the door to explain all the rules and procedures. I loved that they anticipated our arrival and were ready for us even before we entered. This helped keep the kids' concentration on the instructions before they entered the museum and sensory overload set in. They also were kind enough to allow us to use a back storage area for lunch, where they had cafeteria tables set up. It certainly wasn't the most glamorous of lunch areas, but I was grateful that we were out of the way of everything and the noise level wouldn't be an issue. The museum itself isn't massive, but it was MUCH bigger than I was imagining. It includes two historic mansions (which are adjoined to the museum entrance) as well as two floors of historic cars, planes, bikes and of course the famous carousel. The kids weren't all that interested in the mansion portion, but we were amazed to find the BEST kids play area in the back end. They played there for over an hour and absolutely loved all the creative and imaginary toys they had to offer (dress up, train table, clubhouse, play kitchen, giant blocks, etc.) Although there was another large summer group there at the same time ours was, the area was large enough for us to split up and everyone had something to play with an enjoy. Our kids also loved seeing the old cars and planes. Although the exhibits aren't really designed to interactive, the overall grandeur of this room is pretty cool. Overall, although I would have never considered this museum as a go-to children's spot, now my perception of it has completely changed and we were beyond grateful for the incredible staff here. We hope to bring back our students next year and I would highly recommend for others, even those with small children!
