A visit to the Distillery District is not complete without stopping at Soma. The fragrant aroma of chocolate hits your nose as you are walking along the brick-lined streets. In the winter, there is always a long queue (sometimes outside the store) waiting for the thick, rich, velvety hot chocolate (drinking chocolate for the more worldly). It is not your average hot cocoa mom used to make, and definitely has no resemblance to the powdered stuff from the grocery store.
In the warmer months, the gelato and sorbet selection is to die for. Note, only 2 free tastes. Choose wisely.
I always pick up some chocolate delight to take home. My favorite is the dark chocolate covered baci. They are 2 light and delicate cookies made of hazelnut sandwiched between a generous layer of chocolate and then, covered in chocolate. You get 3 giant balls for $6. Not the cheapest treat, but definitely worthwhile. I love picking up treats around Christmas for extra special treats, stocking stuffers, etc. Definitely a fun and welcome gift.
Many restaurants serve Soma chocolates. I have often come across a "Soma chocolate plate" or "Soma gelato" on restaurant menus. If a restaurant loves them enough to put the Soma name on their menu, you know it has to be good.
PS, they have a location on King Street West near Spadina.
