| - Note: this review is for kids classes Toddler to 9 years old. I added a small note on observation for older kids below.
My wife and I signed up my 4.5 year old daughter for a one year unlimited class (12 months @ 185 per month totaling over $2,200 per year). Note: you are locked into the contract. We expected this to be long term and possibly add her sibling as well. Here is our review:
1. Instructors - the owners and staff are very nice and friendly people. They seem to really care. Overall, when we signed up, we wanted them to succeed with teaching our daughter. This was a positive of the class.
2. Environment - it is very clean, spacious, and plenty of room for parents to sit and watch their kids trained. This was another positive.
3. Curriculum - will have to break this up into the pros and cons.
PROS:
We really like the way that they teach courtesy, introduce social responsibilities, and require students to respect one another. It was nice to see that they foster and enforce this during each class.
CONS:
As a parent, when we signed our daughter up for martial arts, our objective was for her to learn MARTIAL ARTS - specifically for self defense. As she gets older, this would become a LIFE Skill for her. At the Kung Fu Academy, it was nice to have her gain the additional social aspect; however, she already gets this from her pre-K classes and other disciplines. During her 11 month stay here, we had her attended both the toddler classes (majority of the time) and the 4-9 year old classes. We noticed that the curriculum was more play than focused on martial arts. When martial arts was "actually taught" - basic punching and kicking - there was not a focus on technique - proper way to punch, kick, and block.
In summary, we like the people and owners here; however, we just did not think the teaching and the curriculum was any good for ages 4-9. We were disappointed. Unfortunately, like other parents there, we were "locked" into the contract as well. Our advice to parents is to attend more than one class and visit more than one school. This was an expensive lesson for us.
Below is a quick OBSERVATION for kids 10 and older...
I like to add a NOTE though. The instructors and owners are extremely nice, courteous, and professional. They are very good people. Granted, we do not recommend their school for age 4-9; however, we WOULD recommend their classes for kids 10 and older. When KEVIN is teaching, he does a very good job with the older kids with instructing and technique. Wish this "attention" to detail was applied to the younger age group. During the observations of the OLDER kids, they do a better job teaching, specifically as it relates to grappling and weaponry.
5/29/2018 -- Follow-up -- have communicated with the owners and have revised/soften the comments... hopefully, the classes for age group (4-9) will be updated to ensure that better technique is provided during the sessions. You don't move on until the students understand the proper way to punch, block, kick. Best way is to repeat, fix technique, repeat... don't leave anyone behind as the saying goes...
