We had been wanting to take our rescue mutt, Stanley for a teeth cleaning and to have his back dewclaws removed for some time. I'd gotten an estimate from my usual vet but was putting it off because they wanted more than $600 for the procedures. By chance a friend mentioned that they go to Porter Pet hospital and the prices for regular vet care are extremely reasonable. With this in mind I thought it couldn't hurt to check with them to see if their prices for procedures would follow suit. Wow I'm really glad I did! Porter did the same procedures for less than ONE THIRD the cost of my usual vet.
Front desk staff was ok on the phone when scheduling but when I arrived to drop off, I had a few questions and clarifications. Definitely was a bother to the front desk lady. Annoyed and dismissive of my questions. Definitely gave the impression that they were dumb questions. You know questions like 'could you confirm the estimate before I sign the consent?' and 'any estimate on when he'll be ready for pick up?' A couple things seemed odd like no written estimate, no scheduled surgery time just all dogs dropped off between certain hours. But hey, whatever works for you I guess.
Went ahead with the surgery/teeth cleaning and I was pleased. Stanley was just totally fine, started eating and drinking almost right away, and really didn't even bother picking at his stitches too much. When we returned to get the stitches out, everyone was nice and helpful. That one annoyed lady wasn't there that day!
I am not one to nickel and dime too much when it comes to my dog, who is a part of my family. And I understand vets are professionals who should be adequately compensated for their skill and time. However.....3 times as much for the same procedures?? I think not. Very glad I made the call to Porter for my dog's procedures.
Can't beat the prices but they should have a talk with mean front-desk lady. Especially if I'm dropping my dog off somewhere he's never been and trusting him with a vet I've never met....a smile and reassurance with my questions would be nice.
Overall pleased with our experiences here. I'll stick with my usual vet for everyday stuff since Porter is pretty far from my house, but next time he needs his teeth cleaned, I know where I'm going.
