  • I'm giving a 2 star rating because of an unexpected and unnecessary mishap that occurred in the afternoon. This mishap has scared me away from this cafe. I've been to this cafe a few times and I have always liked coming here because there are some nice cakes and pastries, and the Van Houtte coffee that is served also tastes great. And the prices for a small coffee are the same as the Tim Hortons and McDonalds down on yonge and bloor and this cafe is also closer to work on Yorkville and Bay so I often get a coffee and sometimes one of the cake slices from here and sit down for awhile at the foodcourt downstairs before starting my evening shift. The best cake was this carrot cake with a nice, sweet cream cheese frosting on top. But, today the experience that I dealt with kind of scared me away from this shop. It was around 4:30pm when the cafe was about to close and they were just tidying up. But the coffee and sugar were still on display. So I asked for a small coffee. Now when you order a coffee, you are given a cup for the size you want and then you go and get the coffee that you like. So I asked for a small cup and paid the one lady $1.50, she saw me place the coins in her hand and I took the small cup and went to get the coffee. There was another lady putting away one of the thermos of coffee, so I just started filling my cup with coffee. Five seconds later, I hear "excuse me, did you pay for the cup?" I looked to my left and it was the lady who had been putting away the thermos. I was surprised to hear that question, because this was the 5th time that I had gotten something from here and I have never been approached like that before. So I said "yes" and she asks the other lady in their language if I had paid and the other lady said that I paid for it. I just glared at her and asked her if she was watching to see me pay for my empty cup. She didn't even smile and apologize for her own misunderstanding. I was just shocked by this ridiculous way of putting a customer under suspicion especially when her co-worker inside had already accepted my payment for the coffee. This incident made me wonder if that lady would have asked a customer in that same manner if they were dressed more like the corporate types in the area. I wore casual clothes because I had to change into my work uniform. I won't be coming back to this cafe for awhile, maybe until it gets colder and I want a coffee.
