| - I really wanted to like Sun Penang when I stepped through their doors a few weeks ago. The place is small but cozy - not uncommon in Pittsburgh - and I admit that when visiting Squirrel Hill I often look forward to the food I can eat at their various Asian restaurants. Unfortunately, my first experience and meal left me feeling exceptionally frustrated rather than satisfied.
There are a few key reasons for this. Firstly is that I found the service to be slow; granted, I do allow leeway for this when servers are managing a large party, and I came with a fairly big dinner group. So while we could have benefited from someone checking on us more often to at least refill water glasses, I understand we were a large party - a few speed-bumps were bound to happen here.
Far more frustrating for me, however, was the trouble we ran into while ordering dinner - and this is something I am not so forgiving about. We learned as we ordered various meals that the kitchen had run out of key ingredients on the menu left and right, from dumplings to crab rangoon to teriyaki sauce. As a result a lot of us ended up skirting around classic Chinese dishes and choosing alternatives when we learned that key staples on their menu were simply unavailable. And, sadly, the food that came to us after all the trouble we had ordering varied in quality. For example, my order (a standard mix of different meats, vegetables and rice) came out ok enough, but the "curry" sauce on a friend's order was basically broth, it was so watery and thin.
Finding an out-of-order women's room in the back before I left did not do anything to sway my opinion in the restaurant's favor. And I admittedly feel obligated here to say that I do get that things happen. Restrooms need to be closed due to unforeseen problems, kitchens run out of ingredients. But still, the experience I had overall was incredibly frustrating, especially since we didn't walk in on a whim: our group made reservations well in advance of visiting. I can excuse some things, but I cannot excuse the lack of preparedness for our party. Hopefully, this is not the norm for Sun Penang, and in the future I have a chance to write a much more positive experience.
