Yesterday was my 4th time eating at The Green Owl since it opened. As a vegetarian I really appreciate being able to go to a strictly veggie establishment. Recently I purchased a Groupon for Green Owl and as a belated b-day gift, my friends took me there for brunch.
They had a good crowd that day when we went. We were able to get a table right away. The service was okay. And I mean just okay. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and a mimosa. Thank goodness me and my friends had stuff to talk about because it seemed like a long time for us to get our food. When the food arrived I was disappointed. Why you ask? As I looked at my plate, I observed one ordinary sized biscuit with some liquid-y brown 'gravy' over it. And not much gravy. Along with the biscuit there was literally a small handful of red potatoes. The taste? A bit of overkill on the seasonings in the biscuit and the gravy was okay; the potatoes were good. My friends tempeh bacon was overcooked but he ate it anyway.
As mentioned above, I like the fact Madison has a veg only restaurant, but there are better places for veg food that offer larger portions for the price you pay. I really, really, really want to like Green Owl but the prices for the amount of food on your plate has me frequenting other establishments.
If you are ever visiting Chicago, go to the Chicago Diner. They excel at vegetarian/vegan food.
