I forgot how much I enjoy the Fremont Street Experience. Most visitors to Las Vegas spend their time among Greek gods, pyramids, or lavish fountains, but they miss the slice of old Vegas preserved underneath a canopy of electronic lights and stereo speakers. Several blocks of Fremont Street are blocked off to vehicle traffic and form the covered pedestrian mall. It is an easy ride from any strip casino.
This was the strip before the strip was the strip. Binions, Golden Nugget, Four Queens, and other classic casinos crammed Fremont Street with as much neon an flashing bulbs as possible to attract people from around the world to lose as much money as possible. The casinos are old and dark like they used to be with strong drinks and cheap eats in classic Vegas style.
The experience draws many visitors with massive video displays at regular intervals after sunset. The displays vary all the time, but usually include popular music and lots of colorful displays to wow the viewer. Many shops are on the mall including drinks and any number of trinkets. You can also get a picture (or more) with any number of nearly naked women with body paint or full dominatrix gear. A popular zip line is overhead for those needing even more punishment.
People watching is by far the best at Fremont Street. You can leave the pretentious crowd of the strip behind and party with the cool people here. Lots of fun and interesting men and women looking for a good time, all at reasonable prices. I love grabbing a drink and a shrimp cocktail then walking down enjoying everything. There are lots of live music and street performers to compliment the overhead performances. Be aware of your surroundings, but there is usually a good police presence to discourage bad actors.
It may be hard to leave the comfort of the strip, but those willing to make the journey will have a really fun time here.
