  • Long before the age of video games or high tech the baby boomers played with quality made sturdy toys and games. Such was the theme of the event I attended with my daughter. With our paid admission we each were given a swag bag that contained a real whoopee cushion, a pin, a small ball, a return ticket to the History Center, 10% off your purchase in the gift shop and some arcade tokens. In the main hall there was a giant chess set, jenga, two giant connect four games, twister-remember these? as well as Rockum sockum robots and of course "operation." There was a retro DJ along with a cash bar. Complimentary pretzels were provided by the Pittsburgh pretzel factory-Ummm Umm good! Finally there was nostalgic candy. Remember the candy necklaces? We had a short tour conducted by an employee named Emily who took us through the toys of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Each room was set up as a typical living room of the period complete with quality toys and some rare originals. How many can remember the Mickey Mouse guitar from the Mickey Mouse club? Barbie, GI Joe, There was even a back yard and a garage with balls to kick around. Lucy's psychiatric desk was set up from Peanuts. Emily stressed to us the quality of the toys before the emergence of plastics. Still as we entered the later period of the 70s, there was the original Star Wars characters and toys to numerous to name. At the end of the tour was the arcade where there were actual pinball machines and then the first video games. Remember PacMan, Ms PacMan and Donkey Kong? I must admit my daughter did a better job than i did but it was full of fun. Let alone how can one forget the hula hoop! Although the event was limited to the first floor the history center holds lots of information on the history of the city I love and I'm so glad to get a free ticket for a return visit. Yes I had fun sitting in the original Racer car from Kennywood next to Howdy Doody. He was in the museum too! We could have played all night. 21 after hour event will continue to run throughout the month of March. I was taking pictures galore and want to thank the Yelp team for making a blast from my past such an enjoyable time.
