| - We looked past the neighborhood, the old building, the dark, noisy interior (that had a door directly at the end so the winter air came through every time someone went in or out) and focused in the amazing steak we were told we'd find there.
I ordered the filet ($42) which came to me rare though I ordered it medium to medium rare. It was a softball shaped thing that would've benefitted from some hand-trimming.
My husband's strip steak was barely edible. Once you removed the fat on the sides and hacked through to the the meat, you realized that this steak was about 6oz.
Everything else was fine but not spectacular. I'm mystified by all the reviews stating how wonderful a place this was for special occasions. It's a pretty dumpy little place that has a weird room at the entrance with a man working alongside computer equipment looking for all the world like a campground check-in hut.
The bill (his strip, my filet,1 glass of wine and 1diet coke) was right at $100.
In that range, you could go to one of the many places Charlotte has to offer.
Every experience is unique. I heard so many wonderful things about this place and really though it might hold a candle to Peter Luger's in NY (best steak in the world, hands down) but no. Maybe it was an off night or all the cows were suddenly chewy.
To each his own and some people might find the laid back atmosphere appealing. For me, a $100 dinner should have crystal and gorgeous ambience, skilled waitstaff and the most mouthwatering, tender cuts from a cow possible.
Here, we felt there was a chance that the Chocolate Silk Pie could be chewy.
