| - Las Palmas Carniceria is actually Las Palmas Ristorante with a loose association to the Brookline/Oakland/Washington Las Palmas family. The owner's wife informed me that she and her husband own and run this restaurant while they await final approval and paperwork from a bank regarding the purchase of the floor in the building they use. Without getting into further details, until that paperwork goes through they are Las Palmas. At some point the couple plans to change the name and begin to advertise. They are located in the same place on Beechview's main drag where Casa Rasta used to be.
The owners are exceptionally fine people who are friendly and attentive that know how to cook truly authentic, delicious Mexican food. It was my pleasure to eat lunch at their restaurant three times with each time being as equally pleasing as the time before. All three times I was the first patron (though others came in after me) in the door so I was greeted and allowed to sit where I wanted ... I don't know if they seat you or if it is the traditional sit where you want.
Here is my honest, candid review of their establishment:
The positives: There are a LOT. Excellent food as I've had their carnitas, enchiladas verde, and tacos de carne asada all of which should bring anyone back again and again. Excellent flavor profiles, balanced tastes, and well presented. They pull the ole' American trick of bringing you freshly house made tortilla chips with salsa de mesa and their chips and salsa are awesome! They have a very reasonably priced menu with portions that exceed the price they charge. They have a wide selection of Jarritos refrescos they will bring upon ordering. They do not advertise so they don't have the most expansive menu but they have enough to keep anyone coming back for now. The owner told me that once they advertise and things change they will expand their menu. You won't find hard shell yellow tacos, yellow cheese, el grande nachos or anything of the sort. They prepare and serve the real stuff right down to their double corn soft, warm tortillas. Everything is cooked to order, few things pre-made, so it takes a bit until your food is served hot and fresh - this is a great thing not a bad thing. Very, very clean place with cool decorations and a small bar. White linen table clothes dress the place up. I hope they make it due to lack of customer traffic because it is just a breath in quality away from La Palapa. I really, really liked it. I paid with cash so I am unsure if this is a cash only business for now.
The negatives: smallish menu for now, they pay homage to Casa Rasta with one of their old dishes on the menu (I thought Casa Rasta was average and very overrated), their salsa needs more spice as their default option plays to the bland side (they will add chili de arbol if you ask), they serve only refried beans for now and one time they had a little to much stock and not enough salt for my taste.
Recommendation: YES ... for now.
