My daughter was discharged today after a 3 day stay for major surgery. With 40+ years as an RN, I knew that I needed to be her advocate. Medicine isn't like it "used to be". Several situations came up that needed advocacy for her, but the staff were always respectful and listened to our needs and expectations. The Same Day Surgery personnel were warm and welcoming and spent time with her to help her manage her fears, especially the charge nurse and her surgery nurse. The nursing care by CNA's and RN's(Jobelle, Melody, and Tammy) exceeded her expectations in care and kindness. The room was kept clean and was very quiet at night. Her husband and I stayed with her through the days and nights and we were treated with utmost courtesy. Her discharge meds were delivered to her prior to leaving, eliminating a stop to a pharmacy to get them filled. This was an awful time for all of us, but the care she received at San Martin gave her a great sense of comfort. In the evening, comforting prayer was hear on the PA system. In the morning, we heard different prayers to start the day and ask for blessings on the staff and patients. What a beautiful way to start and end care. We were very thankful that San Martin hospital was available to us.
