  • I have several complaints about this business and the way things are done with dedicated Lasik surgery centers. Before voicing my complaint, it's worth mentioning my vision before surgery was 20/50 with a very minor prescription but I wanted to be done with hassle of contacts/glasses. I arranged for three consultations (TLC, LasikPlus, and The Lasik Vision Institute). All three centers have the same MO. They offer a free consultation, you spend time with a nurse to do a few eye tests/scans, then you meet with a young female doctor to discuss your candidacy - NOT the doctor who will perform the surgery. The TLC doctor concluded I was a candidate for LASIK and offered a very expensive quote (around $5000 for both eyes). The doctor with TLC also did not offer any guarantee of vision better than 20/30. I was surprised with how much I hear of progress with the surgery in the last few decades so wanted to get a second opinion. My second appointment was with LasikPlus. LasikPlus advertised $250 per eye surgery which I assumed I would qualify for given I barely have a prescription. Of course they found reasons for me (and everyone if you see the feedback on facebook posts) not to qualify. This false advertising alone should warrant a 1 or 2 star review. Once I was in, LasikPlus seemed to do more scans/tests which gave me an initial impression they were more thorough. After having trouble and running one eye test 4-5 times, they concluded I was NOT a candidate for Lasik as my corneas were too thin, but was a candidate for PRK with a quote around $3500 for both eyes. Now I wanted a third opinion. I went to LVI down the street. LVI reached the same conclusion as TLC and saw no issue with me being a candidate for Lasik. I was quoted about $2500 for both eyes. At this point I was very confused which center to go with but decided on LasikPlus as the scans SEEMED more thorough and did not want to cause damage to my eyes. I did get them to price match LVI after I faxed them a copy of my quote. LasikPlus was eager to book the surgery. Up until the day of the surgery I had not met the doctor who would perform the surgery with no opportunity to ask him questions. Five minutes before the surgery, they gave me this opportunity which is very rushed as surgery is scheduled and about to take place. The PRK surgery took place and was very uncomfortable/painful at times but I was able to suck it up for "perfect vision". The first couple weeks post-op were very difficult. Vision was very blurry and I had major issues with glaring, starbursts, ghosting, and hazing. Issues with starbursts and ghosting have improved but not gone away to this day. In week three vision was beginning to stabilize. I notice I had good and bad days where my vision would seem perfectly sharp then get worse the next day. Throughout the recovery I was religious with adding artificial tears, as advised. However one morning early on in my recovery I woke up and opened my eyes quickly. This was never an issue pre-op, but on this morning my eyes experienced shooting pain and began to water like Ive never experienced as my nervous systems response to the pain. It was very clear, this pain was the result of my eyes being so dry to the point of my eyelids causing an unbearable friction just from opening them. I called LasikPlus in a panic and they assured me this was normal. They also made it seem like this wasn't going to be a temporary condition, but rather something I'm going to have to manage for the rest of my life. I asked for an appointment to address my concerns. Throughout the course of the next 7-9 months I met with the doctor on a few occasions (not Dr. Rom who performed the surgery) and tried a few treatment options which would possibly lessen the symptoms but not fix the root issue (add gel ointment into my eyes every night before bed - DIDN'T WORK, buy a humidifier to sleep with - DIDN'T WORK, buy prescription Restasis drops to use everyday - $500/month and DIDN'T WORK!). During this time the young doctor also stated eye nerves begin to grow back in 3-6 months after surgery so the problem may go away naturally. Then when we reached the six month mark, her timeline changed to 6-8 months. I am now 2 years post-op and every morning I have a routine to slowly open my eyes and allow them to produce tears before I start my day. My right eye is decent at 20/20 and my left eye is 20/25. I have issues with ghosting and blurriness at night (those side effects I knew going in and can deal with). Dry-eyes were listed as a possible side effect, but at no point was this overnight dry-eye side effect described or discussed as a painful and permanent condition during any pre-op consultation. The entire point of this procedure was meant to be to take the hassle out of my day. I now have more hassle, more pain, am $2500 poorer, and I don't see as well post-op as I did pre-op with glasses or contacts. If I could do it all again, I wouldn't. If I did, it would be with LVI.
