| - I want so badly to give "The Warhol" a higher rating... I really really do, but we had an experience there this spring that has tarnished my once amazing opinion of this place.
The top floor of the building is ever-changing in it's exhibit, and recently we went there for the comic book art exhibit.
The exhibit was great, but the service and personell left musch to be desired. We showed up at 4:15 on a saturday afternoon, and walked inside. We each paid the $20 admission fee, and decided to start at the top in the previously mentioned exhibit, and work our way down through the building and the other permanent exhibits.
We got to the top floor and began to look around at the pictures and artwork. We were not half-way through that exhibit when the docents began to come around say that they were closing in 20 minutes. 20 minutes? Yes... 20 minutes. Please finish up and begin to exit the building.
WHAT? We just got here, and between all of us we paid you $120! We haven't even seen half a floor!
Now, i fully admit that we did not see the signs posting the closing times, and we didn't look up the hours of operation online either... that is all on us. However, if patrons show up near closing time, don't you think the staff should advise that the admission fee won't get them very long before they have to turn around and leave? The staff at the desk was actually kind of snotty in general, with an attitude that said "you are coming here cause you think are cultured but you totally don't Warhol like i do..." which is annoying, and completely misses the entire point of Andy's work with pop art and common designs. Sorry... I'm digressing.
I was also annoyed that the staff didn't want us to be out by close, they wanted us out much BEFORE close, (i would imagine so that THEY could all be out at close). If you are open till five and I've paid you, then i should be able to be there until 5... not 15 minutes before. Please don't rush me. I know you have to go home and you have plans that likely include working on a fixed-gear bike and creating culture of which no one else will "understand the irony" but my friends from out of town just paid a lot of hard-earned money to look at stuff and your job is to let them.
Sorry again... i was frustrated. I wrote a lengthy, but very very polite letter to the museum explaining that while we were at fault for not taking note of the closing time the treatment from the staff and their willingness to take our money without mentioning it was close to closing time was a disappointment. I heard nothing back, and I have come to expect much more from my beloved Carnegie Museums.
From an exhibit standpoint that place is excellent, and I love going there to see it all. Again I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY want to give this a higher rating and tout it as a great place, but it was such a discouraging experience last time, that I (sadly) cannot. I hope they can fix it... there is little in this world that give me more joy than writing an update to this that would warrant a 4 or 5 star rating.
