  • After reading a few reviews, I realized very few people talked about the volunteer process. NSPCA holds an orientation on the first Saturday of every month for those who are interested in volunteering. Admittedly, I was both nervous and excited as I had never volunteered in a shelter before. The woman conducting the session didn't seem very excited to be there. I was expecting some enthusiasm because most volunteers only volunteer because they love what they do, at least that's what I would hope for. She said she had been there for 6 years. I'm not sure WHAT was happening in the back, but it was so loud, I couldn't hear what she was saying for most of the presentation. Lots of banging in the background. As for the information I did pick up, she mostly just read from a piece of paper that everyone already had. There were many volunteers leaving the shelter to walk the dogs. They're told to keep the dogs on a short lease while in the building, but holy cow. The dogs seemed like they were nearly choking because the leashes were being pulled so tight. One dog was literally wheezing and thrashing his head around. Broke my heart. After the presentation, I went to turn my application into the woman. I asked how long I can expect to wait before I was contacted. First of all, she had absolutely no eye contact. She wasn't concerned at all with my questions. She then promptly said "6 to 8 weeks" HOLY MOLY. Nearly two months to start volunteering? That's insane. Their website also asks all new volunteers to bring a record of their recent shots so they can check for tetanus shots. I handed the lady my records and she just handed it back. She didn't even look at it. What a joke. And last but certainly not least, my boyfriend and I asked if we may enter the lovebug room (where the rabbits, Guinea pigs, and rats are kept). What a heartbreaking scene. All the bunnies were kept in small spaces, though I wouldn't say too small. There was poop, dirt, and dust EVERYWHERE. There was nothing in the cages except maybe a plastic ball. All the bunnies were crouching and scared out of their minds in the corners of the cage. And then they started vacuuming! While in the bunnies were in the room! They just moved around them! I nearly adopted all of them on the spot just to save their poor souls. I'm torn between staying to help the poor babies trapped in this place, and wanting to get as far away from their workers as possible. I only provided three stars because I appreciate their presence. I suppose these animals could be in worse situation.
