  • What a great experience it was to hire Custom Specialties Group. My sister-in-law wanted a new mantle for her fireplace and also had a problem with water leaking from the chimney into the walls. We went to a few places before we found Custom Specialties Group. They sent a father/son team, Roy and Roy, to our house the next day. They drove up, introduced themselves, and were on the chimney before we could even get our shoes on to go out to meet them. They diagnosed the problem and offered a simple solution. We were fine with the solution but we wanted a guarantee. To do that would require a new set of parts in our chimney (our fireplace had been replaced and had two different types of equipment) to which we agreed. A few days later, Roy and Roy, came by and fixed the chimney without the new equipment we already agreed to pay them for. "The new parts would take a couple of weeks and probably aren't even necessary. You won't have any more issues with the way we fixed it and if you do we can just order the parts then" they told us. I have never seen a small business fix a problem for free when a customer had already insisted on paying them for a solution (and I don't blame other businesses, cash flow can be tricky). We have already had a few rain storms and there hasn't been any problems. Roy and Roy were the most precise, clean, and respectful contractors we have ever had the pleasure of having in our home for both the chimney repairs and all the mantle work (from design to install). They matched the new mantel's color to our existing marble tile and were meticulous with every aspect of the work (from leveling to caulking). But that is the thing about Custom Specialties Group they are a small business but they do SO MUCH work that diagnosing problems and customizing/installing mantels is honestly not a problem for them. They have a smallish office in North Las Vegas, which was in various states of disassembly when we visited, but they complete a vast amount of work everyday. They are the living definition of the knowledgeable, hard working, down-to-Earth craftsmen who complete an incredible amount of work without issue or self promotion (think older, "Greatest Generation" type of workmanship as an example). There were no games with pricing, delivery dates, workmanship, etc. I honestly don't think they have the time for such nonsense. It was amazing to watch Rick make the time to talk to two uncertain customers, my family, (explaining the different materials, the advantages to different setups they were looking at, etc) with all the patience and easy going humor of a saint (and this was before I knew how busy the guy was). It was an incredibly rewarding experience to get to know Custom Specialties Group. They are a great group of people (from Rick, all the way down to the people doing the installs like Roy and Roy Jr). A picture of the completed work is below. We did the tile ourselves but the color, texture, size, and everything else about the mantel is absolutely perfect. You are going to be looking at your fireplace everyday for a long time into the future. Make sure it is done right, and get to know some great people, talk to Custom Specialties Group.
