  • I'm a really big fan of visiting craft breweries as I like to explore tons of different styles and flavors. The local craft beer scene in Pittsburgh continues to grow and impress with each new offering. Out of all of the Pittsburgh area breweries that I've had the pleasure of visiting, Hitchhiker Brewing sits in my Top 5. I don't just rank them highly because I live within a 5 minute walk, they deserve all the praise that I can give simply due to the fact that they aren't afraid of trying new things and tend to not limit themselves within the confines of what the trendy beer style of the week might be. Each new release is inventive and takes some risks. The majority of the time, this really pays off. I'm so glad they they recently started packaging their beer in 16 oz cans. This is a great way for their product to reach more craft beer fans. I also love that they offer 32 oz crowlers of anything that is available on draft. An aluminum crowler is so much better than the glass growlers of yesterday, and I hope more breweries head this direction as well. As for the brewery itself, I really like what they did to the place. Starting with an old building that has a historic tie to the long-gone Fort Pitt Brewery, they kept the space simple and industrial. The room used to brew is very impressive with the extremely high ceilings. The taproom keeps things simple with lots of options for seating, a very large bar, a massive amount of tap handles, and room to move around. A lot of the other breweries in the area suffer from size issues in that it's hard to move around when there is a large crowd. I haven't found this to be the case with Hitchhiker, and it's not uncommon for me to stop in at least once each week. The staff is both knowledgeable and friendly, and they are always ready to answer questions. There are some small in-house food options (nuts, pretzels, etc.), but a standout would be that they offer Leona's Ice Cream Sandwiches. It's amazing to be able to walk down the street for a beer and delicious treat whenever the craving arises. Hitchhiker also does a great job of bringing in top-notch food trucks on average about 4-5 days during the week. This is also another big draw since Sharpsburg currently doesn't have too many dining destinations. Overall, I can't sing Hitchhiker's praises enough. Anytime friends come to visit, we make it a point to walk down and grab a delicious pint. You should do the same.
