  • I recently signed up for an LA Fitness membership on a Thursday. At the time, I signed up my husband and mother-in-law because I was told if they tacked on memberships at a later time, they too had to pay an initiation fee. But I could sign them up, have their initiation fees waived, and if I went home and they did not want the membership, I could cancel them when I came in for my physical training, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday. I also pre-paid for daycare. Between Thursday evening and Sunday morning, I received five sales calls to schedule physical training (even though I was already scheduled). On Sunday, I was called to see why I didn't show up for my 11:30 a.m. physical training. I told them I was scheduled for 2 p.m. He was now booked at 2, so we rescheduled for Tuesday. At my rescheduled training on Tuesday evening, not only was the training awful (I've had lower back pain for three weeks now which did not exist prior), but it was only AFTER this appointment that it was explained to me that pre-paid packages must be purchased to receive personal training - even though at the time of membership purchase, I explained that I wanted an hour of personal training every 4-6 weeks in a pay-as-you-go-model. Apparently this isn't even an option, which should absolutely be explained during membership sign-up. Having witnessed several red flags in just five short days, I decided to revoke my membership. I even offered to pay for my initiation fee and my first two months and only asked for a refund for the daycare that wasn't once utilized and the membership fees for my husband and mother-in-law who I would've cancelled had they not screwed up my personal training time and who never once stepped foot into the gym, and LA Fitness refused. To add insult to injury, it took me writing a letter (they asked me to document my issues, admitting they have serious customer service issues) and more than 15 follow-up calls over a two-week period to even get an answer. LA Fitness is a prime example of the anything-for-a-buck model. Their policies and procedures need serious work and their customer service is among the worst I've seen. It seems as if they put as many costs up front as possible because they know soon, you too will get fed up and quit. A physical therapist has also since informed me that many of their "personal trainers" are not certified to actually train people. So they're a pain in the back AND a pain the ass.
