| - I visited Mattress Firm on Rainbow Boulevard on Saturday, Dec. 24. While there, I found a mattress/adjustable base I was interested in. Their salesman, Phil Manel, told me that he could give me the mattress/base at a cost of approximately $50 a month. I agreed because it sounded like a fantastic deal. I should have known right then and there that something was not right.
Since I did not have the necessary cash, I asked for credit. Unfortunately, I was denied. He then told me that I could "lease" the bed. At no time did he ever tell me that the cost of the mattress would more than double ($2,000 to $4,000) and that my monthly payments would be significantly higher. I never saw any sort of lease agreement or signed anything while at the store. He told me that Progressive would email me the documents to sign with information about payment dates etc.
On Tuesday morning, shortly before bed was due to be delivered, I received SIGNED paperwork from Progressive. The paperwork indicated that I would be required to make biweekly installments of approximately $166. There's a BIG difference between $50 and $332. I immediately told my boyfriend to refuse delivery, which he did, and called Progressive.
Progressive told me that as far as they know, I saw the contract and signed it at the store. I assured Progressive that I did not sign anything. The customer service representative said there would be no problem canceling the order after she verified the bed was refused.
However, when she called the store, she was told that she would have to call back because they were too busy to talk to her at the time. In fact, that happened twice within 2 hours. Whomever was working at the story on Dec. 26 could not take 5 minutes to verify that I had refused delivery of a bed. As a result, a claim has been opened and assigned to Progressive's claims team, which means I will probably have to deal with more phone calls/paperwork and it will take several days or longer to be refunded the money already withdrawn from my account (a setup fee). Meanwhile, my hopes of finally being able to get a good night's sleep (I have issues with hip and back) have been destroyed.
I feel that I was deliberately deceived by the store. I have never "leased" anything in my life. I don't even have a car payment. I am not familiar how leases work in regards to merchandise and had no reason not to believe what I was being told by the salesman at Mattress Firm. He seemed to like a trustworthy guy. I realize that I should have been aware of how leasing works and I am certainly aware now. Apparently the salesman was more concerned about making a sell than telling me the truth and even falsified my e-signature. I guarantee you that if there is surveillance video, it will prove that I never did anything more than initial a piece of paper that explained the process for returns if not satisfied with quality. I never looked at a computer screen or e-signed anything.
I will not recommend this story or company to anyone. And if the situation is not resolved by the end of the week, I will consider further action.
