| - If you give this place less than four stars then you don't actually live in Madison full time. Yes better bagels exist in the world, but the dearth of quality bagels in Wisconsin makes this place an automatic 5 star for me. Coming from Chicago (in my case) or New York to Madison, after pizza and hot dogs, bagels are the next thing you'll miss. Einstein bros and Duncan donuts are trash. Every morning was a little extra depressing as I choked down my subpar bagel UNTIL I found Gotham.
Good quality nyc/real Jewish style bagels. Excellent spreads (green onion all the way baby!) and house cured lox. For the less traditional, they offer very good egg sandwiches too, but I personally see no reason to every stray from lox n cream cheese. Oh and if you've never tried one before, get a bialy. It's like the bagels super chill cousin that everyone loves. No need for cream cheese or toasting, I like to order one on addition to my bagel, to enjoy as a snack later.
Located just off the square. Good space inside. The only negative is the hours. For uw students, they close just after the hangover ends. I love breakfast for dinner, so i really wish they stayed open to at least 430. However, this is standard for bagel shops.
