I began renting from Extra Space in May of 2016. I disliked being forced to provide my banking info for automatic payments, as I prefer to choose how I'd like to pay. But the final straw occurred in December 2016. I needed a larger unit, and was told that once I paid for the new unit, I had 24 hours to move my things out of the old unit. I was going to be out of town so this presented a problem. I offered to pay to have an extra day or two, but they wouldn't allow it. I was advised that there were a few units left so just call when I was ready.
I called about a week later, ready to pay the money and move into the larger unit. I was informed that the price had increased by $30 per month. It turns out the initial price I was given was a promotional rate, but nobody bothered to tell me it was a promotional rate. It would have been nice if I had all the necessary info to make a decision. Instead all I kept hearing was "There is nothing we can do", which is the equivalent of a verbal shoulder shrug. They even went as far as to fault me for not locking in my rate...even though I knew I wouldn't have been able to move my things in 24 hours.
I expect satisfactory customer service for my money, and Extra Space Storage seems content to simply take my money while not providing any solutions. I will be taking my business elsewhere before the next mandatory automatic payment is siphoned from my bank account.
