| - I was so excited that a boba place so close to Gilbert was opening. They opened last Friday so they had a few days to get into the swing of things. I finally found time to pop in today, bright eyed and bushy tailed with a heart full of hope that this will be my new boba spot. The space is small, with a few tables for 4. It can get rather crowded if a group of 10 people comes in. Cute decorations and it was clean. Now on to the drinks....
....and sighhh. It was not good.
My daughter ordered her go-to drink, a mango smoothie. Only, she said it tasted weird and when I tried it, I realized it was the kind of drink that is made from the flavored powders. Big disappointment. It left a slight chalky residue in my mouth which I totally despise. So I asked about it and the cashier confirmed it, most of their smoothies are made with powder, but a few of their smoothies are made with real fruit like the avocado, lychee, and durian ones. I thought future customers would appreciate this tidbit of knowledge.
I was curious about the mung bean milk listed under the "special" section and was told it is made with cooked mung beans and made into a drink. I asked before I finalized the order if it was sweet and was told it is sweet and is very good, and I should order it. (Maybe she was trying to be a salesperson?) I went ahead and ordered it with boba. When it came out, they forgot the boba. So I sent it back and when I actually tried it, I took my first sip and let it marinate, trying to see if the sweetness would come through. It wasn't sweet to me at all and it had a gritty texture that I wasn't expecting. The cashier came by to see how we liked the drinks and I felt I had to be honest with her. I told her it actually wasn't sweet like she said, and it wasn't what I expected at all, and that I honestly didn't like it. Her response was, "Awww, well now you know so just order something different next time." No offers were given to try a different drink, which kinda sucked since I felt she gave high praise and suggested I order it. I couldn't finish it bc of how unpleasant the taste was, which totally blows because I love boba drinks so much.
My husband got the black milk tea with boba and that was good. It tasted a little light, like it was more milk than tea, so it's good if you like the lighter milk tea. And it was sweet. So out of all the drinks, we liked this one the best. (Thank goodness)
And then..... we ordered the popcorn chicken because it is one of my favorite snacks to order at Boba places. I was told this was really good Chinese 5 spice popcorn chicken "like they make in California".....so again, I was hoping that it'd be really good. But no. It was so bad! No one should recommend the popcorn chicken to anyone!!! For being $4.95, it comes in a paper baggie in a rather small portion. And the batter that covered the chicken was not crispy at all. I don't know what they did but it was just awful. They have a 5 spice powder and cayenne powder you can sprinkle your chicken with...but they need much more than that to salvage the chicken. We couldn't even finish the bag which bothered me so much because I hate paying for food and wasting it.
All in all, I wasn't impressed with the service or the product, which is a huge disappointment. And I was annoyed that the cashier was more concerned with socializing with her friend sitting at a table than serving customers. (We watched twice as the "cook" in the back came out, looked annoyed, then had to bring the drinks to the seated customers because she was at her friend's table chatting away). I'll come back to try out other drinks in hopes that something is worth coming here for. Or I guess I'll keep driving a little further to Warner and Dobson for better boba.
