  • Why am I the first one to write about Jimmy's? I moved to Chicago recently and I need to find the equivalent. It says "Spirits and Food" on the sign outside. Plenty of spirits, but aside from the pretzel rods and chips that have been hanging on the wall since Jesus was born, there is no food. This place is 180 degrees from pretentious. If you're good to the bartenders, they're friends for life. (Donnie, I'm looking at you.) They're not much for specials or anything. I didn't go for the specials (or lack thereof). They have a couple of pool tables, and the standard variety of bar video games, and a jukebox, which is usually playing awesome old rock or newer indie-type stuff or Spanish music--whatever the patrons want to put on. The clientele is great. Working-class people, anywhere from twenties to sixties. College kids, but not frat/sorority kids. I've seen them walk in and turn right around and leave, because that's not what kind of place Jimmy's is. It smells like cigarettes, it's dark-ish, and it's on the great side of the dive bar line. Definitely a regulars place, but those regulars will make you feel welcome if it's your first time. I'm giving it five stars because it's home. If you're not looking for a bar similar to what I've described, you won't like Jimmy's. But I adore it.
