| - I visited Tan Lac Vien today with a friend for lunch. Of three places I suggested that I'd bookmarked in SqHill, my friend chose this one. For my part, I welcomed her suggestion to visit, since it had been quite awhile since I'd last had pho.
We ordered cha gio (spring rolls) to split ($5), and we each ordered a lunch sized bowl of pho ga (chicken pho; $8). The spring rolls came out within 5 min., and were quite good. They were appropriately crispy on the outside, and flavorful and well-textured on the inside. While they were great on their own, they came with an accompanying sauce that added some additional flavor and heat. Both of us enjoyed them very much.
As for the pho, its broth was rich and savory, and stood quite well on its own, although I added some sriracha and hoisin to add some extra interest to the second half. The proportion of noodles seemed about right, and the fresh herbs were a nice accompaniment that we both took advantage of. It could just be my American palate, but the amount of chicken included seemed a bit stingy, though it was white meat. Again, both of us enjoyed the pho, though both of us are far from being pho experts (this was her first time eating it and my second).
Overall, we were quite pleased with our experience at Tan La Vien. The price seemed pretty reasonable, given the food quality and portion size, and we were able to get an additional 10% student discount, thanks to her (I no longer qualify, unfortunately). The setting and service were fine, as well, so no complaints there. If you're hungry for a bowl of pho in SqHill, check this place out--it doesn't disappoint!
