  • I'd really like to write more positive reviews. But I gotta find some positive places first. Our group of 6 shows up for lunch at 11:30. Tiny parking lot already full. Inside of restaurant only half-full (as everybody in Phoenix drives one to a car), but patrons are seated in such a manner as to spread them out as thinly as possible in the very small interior space, meaning there's noplace for a party of 6 except outside in the alley - I mean patio. We go outside as instructed, told a waiter'd be right with us. We sit down and are completely ignored for the next 20 minutes. We go inside twice to ask for wait help. A waiter comes finally, he says he just arrived. Another 10 mins for water and to take our order. Food comes out s l o w l y, one and two plates at a time. It was pho and bun and banh mi, but the pho came with brown and withered basil leaves, brown-tipped bean sprouts, and not much else. I'm accustomed to seeing scallions and cilantro and lettuce with pho, but not here, not today, not even for $10. Another diner's spring roll order was one spring roll - 5" by 2" diameter, and it cost $4. I thought this totally failed the bang-for-the-buck test. My saigon bun (salad) was ok, pretty much what you'd expect, and fresh enough. It had no basil or cilantro though. The dressing tasted of nothing but straight fish sauce - far too fish-saucy for me. Co-diners complained about the strong odor of it. I've had fish sauce preparations in other Viet places and they were never this potent. The Viet coffee I ordered at the beginning of service came out at the end of the meal, after our plates had been removed, this after the waiter promised on at least 3 previous occasions that it would be served immediately. The interior design is pleasant. They need to learn not to seat a party of 2 at a 6-top at the beginning of lunch - you might just get a party of 6. The service was tense, frantic and way too slow for an urban work lunch - we were there for just under 2 hours. It was difficult getting out of the crowded lot because, well, because it's really too crowded for cars. I recommend parachuting in. This place merits 1 1/2 stars, but I'm weary of writing one-star reviews.
