  • Where do I begin? Well, first of all, I tend to be wary of companies that invest so heavily in marketing that it seems almost like they build up their product based on hype. I get bombarded with Omaha Steak flyers probably at least once a week so I feel like at any point in time there's some sort of "sale" going on. This explains why their retail prices are so high, because it will be just marked down because of the omnipresent "sale". I've also found their freebies seem almost too good to be true. I've gotten coupons for 4 free filet mignons with a certain purchase amount which makes me wonder how much their actual costs are for the beef if they can spare that much free steak for a customer purchase. That being said, I'll admit I've been lured in by those ads on occasion. I've tried their steaks at the Chandler location and have always had pleasant and very polite service, and with a good enough "sale" I've found products that are reasonably priced enough for me to take the plunge and get a few steaks or steak pieces for stir fry. I don't cook a lot of steak at home, so for me the good customer service and convenient packaging with a sale is worth it every now and then. Since the Chandler location closed down, the only store location here in AZ is at Desert Ridge, which is quite a trek from where I live. I saw a flyer in the mail for 8 burgers for $5 and I had the day off so the cheapskate in me figured I'll give the Phoenix location a try. The Desert Ridge Marketplace map shows the Omaha Steaks building as a separate stand alone structure in between Barbeques Galore and Macaroni Grill. Looking at the business owner's photos on Yelp it also looked like it was a stand alone store from the storefront photos. I did some browsing around the shopping area before heading over to where I thought Omaha Steaks would be. The only structure that is in between Barbeques Galore and the Macaroni Grill is an empty building. "Did they go out of business?" I thought. So, I called them up to confirm their location. I don't think I could have gotten any ruder service from the employee on the other end of the line. She treated me like I only had one brain cell in my body (That is quite untrue, I have at least two). No one likes to be treated like they are stupid, and she certainly had that tone in her voice on the phone. Based on the customers shopping when I was here, for a business whose main clientele skews towards an older crowd, you would think they would treat everyone that inquires or walks into the store with respect. I wasn't expecting the Omaha Steak shop to be in the same location as the Barbeques Galore building, and from where I was walking from I didn't see enough of the sign to notice that "Omaha Steaks" is posted underneath it. There was a huge line when I got here. The lines made it seem like I was at Disneyland and everyone had the same 8 for $5 ad that I had. Perhaps there should have been a sign that day stating "You must be this patient to go on the Omaha Steak Adventure" (The spectrum ranges from Zootopia's Flash Slothmore DMV agent to police bunny Judy Hopps). Unlike the Chandler location, only a certain number of people were allowed to shop in the store thus explaining the lines. I get it, you don't want customers waiting a long time to pay with their frozen merchandise and have it thaw out and perhaps if the Chandler location were still open and running the same deal they'd do the same thing, but I didn't really want to wait easily an hour for a set of $5 burgers in the hot sun when I could do other things with my free day off. I also decided I didn't want to give them my business if I was getting bad vibes from the store due to my first impression of them on the phone. 1 part high prices + 2 parts rude customer service + a dash of waiting in line when it's approaching 100 degrees outside = Recipe for disaster!
