  • "As soon as I can afford some staff I'll open a little earlier," Katie told me as she drew my pint of Spearhead, "but right now I spend most of the day biking around to all the LCBOs to find a bottle here, a bottle there in order to stock my beer fridge." That was the first time I really paid attention to the fridge. I thought she'd impressed me with the well curated list of daught taps, but it turned out I had not yet plumbed the depths of the impression that Thirsty & Miserable would lay on me throughout the evening. Thirsty & Miserable is a dive bar, but not a dive. I'm one of the least hip people you'd care to meet, and actually walked in wearing a button-down shirt and dress shoes, but felt instantly welcome and at home. No judging, extremely casual ambience (the range hood and some other elements of the previous Freshwood Grill remain, as does a slight fish smell), low music in the background and candles at the clean yet grimy looking tables. This is a place for a drink and a chat, or a drink and a book, or just a drink and another drink. The drinks are mostly beers. She's got something for everyone, and isn't pretentious about it. One of her favourite chores is clearing the taps at the start of a shift, and having a sip of the swamp water that results. Taps are drawn from local microbreweries, and bottles range from regional to international, with interesting stops inbetween. There's wine and mixed drinks as well, but it's obvious that's not the focus. "I have some microwave dinners, but I figure if you really want food, there are better places nearby to get it, so just bring it back." I'm told when I ask if there's any snacks to be had. It's a legal requirement, really, that she's fulfilling, not anyone's desire to eat no-name nuked beef and mashed potatoes. Not a trendy bar, not a cocktail bar, not an artesan spot for those who like to craft beer (not knocking Volo, I love that place as well, but the vibe is decidedly different) just a place for people who like to drink beer and not be overwhelmed in so doing. I will be back.
