| - A couple of weeks ago, Michael Moore sent out a series of tweets commenting on a general decline in movie theaters. Operators running less than ideal intensity through the projectors to save money, failing to remove 3D filters for 2D movies, and so on.
He also commented that those running theaters better start waking up, because the HOME THEATER experience in many ways is starting to surpass going out to the movies.
This past weekend I checked out a movie at the newly renovated Empire with those comments echoing in my mind. With a decent enough setup at home, is it now a downgrade experience going out for a movie?
I've been going here for years, but this was my first experience post-reno. I have to say, positive improvements have been made.
The biggest is the reorg of the food concessions. Now, one "bank style" line forms, and the next in line goes to the next available cashier. This of course is the most logical way to "line up," but sadly not all businesses catch on. Hence the "getting stuck in the slow line" scenarios. Empire has fixed that.
As well, all food is available from this one line, greatly streamlining the whole process.
I didn't pay too much attention to the decor changes, but chuckled at some the 70's retro wood paneling accents. It reminded me of theaters I visited as a kid.
With the usual price gouging on popcorn complete, I took my seat.
When the previews started, the Michael Moore tweets rang true. Picture quality really wasn't nearly as good as "home," but that changed once the movie started. It was actually fine.
But the fact that they were running "cheerleading" promos about how great going OUT to the movies is was a sign they are very much aware of shifting attitudes with some people.
At any rate, it was a positive experience from the moment I walked through the doors. No complaints there.
The only downside is there just isn't enough parking on a weekend evening. Due to the number of popular restaurants and businesses all sharing the same space, it can be a bit of a gong show.
