  • The first time I came here I thought it reminded me of the area around the Town Square in Prescott. You know, lots of tourist shops and buildings with "Old West" facades. Plus some cool bronze statues of cowboys. And a nice fountain. Wait, is there a fountain in Prescott? I can't remember. Anyway, I am off topic here. The point is, Old Town Scottsdale has all the Southwest charm of any small town tourist spot in AZ but on top of that some of the best high-end shopping and dining of anywhere in Phoenix but without the snooty "real housewives" vibe you get in North Scottsdale. It is a great place to hang out any day of the week and especially for out of town visitors. Be aware that the late night crowd on Fridays and Saturdays consists mostly of ASU students looking to get drunk and/or hook up. But a little earlier in the evening you have a wonderful dinner and take a nice stroll along the canal. Some of my favorite spots are Herb Box, 5th and Wine and The Gelato Spot. But new places are popping up all the time including new branches of hot spots from other parts of the valley like Hulas and Cornish Pasty Co. And with all this popularity you would think there would be a parking shortage or at least high prices but no, street parking is free even though most have a limit of 3 hours (and yes, the cops do check and issue tickets!). Your best bet is to park in one of the free garages scattered around. Most of them are underground (so as not to ruin the lovely street level ambiance). And if you want to visit multiple locations without a lot of walking, you can always jump on the trolley and they sometimes have Pedi cabs during peak tourist season. Much easier than dealing with the parking hassles of Mill Ave or downtown Phoenix!
