| - The Lanier Mansion is a three story home, one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Madison, which now serves as a museum. Built in the 1800's, the Lanier Mansion is a beautiful building surrounded by antique pathways and beautiful gardens. Tours start at specific intervals throughout the day, and the tours last around 45 minutes. The home is absolutely gorgeous, with various pieces in the home that actually belonged to the Lanier family. Most of the pieces are recreations, as the rest of the belongings were passed down and remain in the homes of the surviving family members.
If memory serves, the first floor has 14 foot ceilings and the second has 12 foot ceilings. The third floor, however, which was dedicated to the children, only had a height of six feet. Luckily, I'm only 5'5" so it was not a problem for me, but a man who was with us did have to bend down while walking. It was a very bizarre experience, and even pictures can not do it justice.
The gardens outside, where lavish dinner parties were held, is gorgeous as well, and blooms year round, with different sorts of flowers and shrubs. The home's lot sits right across the street from the Visitor's Center, and the front of the home is built facing the Ohio River. Lots of photography experiences available, and a nice place to spend an hour.
