| - Come through the looking glass. You'll soon realize that Alice and the Mad Hatter and the March Hare were sharing ice cream sundaes, not tea! I am speaking, of course, of the wall murals in the back of the restaurant. They are such a perfect replica of the style of the illustrations in the original Lewis Carroll novel! Whoever painted the mural did a fabulous job; much of the magic of Malley's comes from the wondrous scenery.
I have so much to say about this place. It was an ice cream parlor where childhood dreams came true, right down the the pink and green color scheme and the very smell of the place. I used to imagine this is what heaven might smell like; the soft aroma of fancy chocolates lingering sweetly on the air.
I have a diary entry from third grade about this place. I was allowed to stay out late on a school night (!) because a friend's mom took my friend and I out to see the Babysitter's Club Movie (in my entry, I was super excited about the movie, which is curious because I was never a reader of the series). After the movie, she took us for ice cream sundaes at Malley's, and I was immediately lost in the ambiance of the place. It was almost 10:00 at night, and here I was, eating the Pink Elephant (peppermint stick ice cream, Spanish peanuts, hot fudge, whipped cream) in a scene straight from Alice in Wonderland. It was a night from my childhood I'll never forget.
Since then I've had many such excursions. I remember coming in high school and daring friends to try to chug the small container of hot fudge (such as you could at that consistency; their fudge is unbelievably rich and thick). I remember senior year getting a group together to go dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland. How I, a brunette, ended up playing Alice, I'll never know. We also had a Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, March Hare, Queen of Hearts, even the Doormouse! An old lady wandered over and asked if we were in a play, or some sort of street performers or improv troupe. Nope, we just wanted to wear costumes and eat ice cream.
Every Lakewood kid at some point has to sell their chocolate bars for a fundraiser. The quickest way to improve morale in any high school classroom is to announce that you are selling Malley's chocolate, and that you still have the Pretzel bars in stock. Perfection in a confection.
As for the ice cream, you will never be disappointed. The portions are gargantuan (great for sharing!). I myself will typically go for the brownie sundae, the banana split, or the Pink Elephant.
This is a quintessential Lakewood experience, and is not to be missed! Doing so might be deleterious to your Lakewood cred.
