| - I've been here quite a few times since UPMC East has opened due to a chronic illness. I have had some wonderful nurses while admitted. Attending doctors are normally okay as well, although bedside manner can be a hit-or-miss. I have had rude/dismissive doctors but I don't necessarily judge UPMC East for that.
It's a very clean and beautiful hospital. I have loved having my own room. For a hospital, the food has always been pretty good too. They've always been accommodating to visitors, even overnight ones. They've always let my mom (a nurse) be very involved.
Of course it has its downsides, too. You just don't know what you'll get in the ER - will the staff be attentive or hardly seen? Will they take your symptoms seriously or treat you like you're a drug-seeker? A bad experience I had over this summer was that I felt like my pain was very-much dismissed when I visited. The doctor was asking me what dose I should be put on, as if I have any idea..but once again, that's the doctor and not necessarily UPMC East. The informational packet they gave me on my illness was for the wrong condition, which made me feel like they didn't really care.. Unfortunately I left the ER crying that day, still in pain and feeling completely dismissed. I visited the ER weeks later for more pain, and once again didn't have the best experience, but that time I asked to stay on observation. I'm glad I did because I ended up staying a few days, and needed surgery the following week.
But I still like UPMC East and it will continue to be the hospital I prefer to visit when necessary. It's never fun to visit an ER or be hospitalized, but I have had some amazing nurses who have made such a difference in my stays.
