  • SETTING: Clean and open space. Multiple tables to seat small or big parties. Quite expansive buffet that ran along the back wall of the restaurant. FOOD: Was in the area for lunch and had an Asian food hankering. All I knew was 1) Me hangry, and, 2) Want something Asian, but didn't have a specific asian cuisine in mind. After zero thought process, I decided to go for the shotgun approach. Asian lunch buffet, I'm coming for ya. There was a little bit of everything at Hokkaido. It's not a Japanese buffet as the name may seem to suggest. It was a pan-Asian buffet that served sushi, seafood, dim sum, noodles, meat, dessert. We all know that a buffet is usually quantity over quality. So no particular knock on Hokkaido, but I got what I expected: a sampling of your typical Westernized Asian fare. Don't expect anything fancy or traditional, this is a buffet...you get the Westernized "favorites" (ie: california roll, general tso's, chow mein, etc). Oh, and if you need some good 'ol traditional American delicacies to add to the mix, you can pick up some pizza, soup, and salad. For buffet standards, the sushi was decent (I was scared to try the raw fish because I wasn't sure how fresh it was...that's just me). Seafood was fine (mussels, squid, etc). Not the freshest, but tasty enough. Chinese food was what you would expect from a fast food Chinese joint. It was one of those days where I just wanted to stuff my face with all kinds of asian food and wasn't so picky, so I was satisfied--minus the grease stain I left on my shirt. SERVICE: Minimal but attentive, which is what I would expect at a buffet because you help yourself. They take away your old plates and refill your drinks quickly. IMPRESSIONS: I left Hokkaido with one hand over my stomach from over-eating (3 plates in 30 minutes! Ugh!), and another hand holding a slightly stale creampuff. I probably muttered something the lines of "never again," but that's too bold of a statement to be of any value. But $10 for a lunch buffet...now that's value, even if it is Westernized Asian food.
