| - crudo - Modern Italian and Progressive Mixology. This location was an Awesome location for Wine Down Wednesday!
Crudo definitely matched its concept. The restaurant is outfitted with simple fixtures, comfortable furnishings, industrial accents, modern concrete flooring, dim lighting, and window-encased alcoves. The décor works well when brought together, much like the exotic combinations in the cuisine and cocktails. I was super impressed with the staff. Although they don't open until 5, I was still able to wait inside the restaurant which saved me from the AZ heat.
We were greeted by the bartender, or should I say Mixologist. This guy was truly proud of all of his cocktail creations. He did an excellent job of asking us what our preferences were and recommended drinks that matched our tastes. He let us know that all of their juices are fresh squeezed, they make their own infused simple syrup and they only use high quality spirits. All of the recipes for their drinks were designed by him and are perfectly balanced. While the alcohol is definitely present in the drinks, you really can't taste it. In other words the drinks are really flavorful, and they make you relax quickly. All of a sudden you are feeling Great and then you remember, oh yeah, that was a cocktail I was drinking.
The drinks start out traditional, but then are upgraded with unique ingredients. For example one of the ladies had a Whiskey Sour, that was finished off with an egg white. The foam from the drink even had 3 little hearts on top. (see the photo below). I had a drink called Grapexpectations that was a gin based cocktail garnished with grapes along with the Tongue Tied which was a Mescal based cocktail containing lavender and lime. Other cocktails included the No Name, which is their version of a Manhattan, the crudo margarita and the Milano Gimlet. All of the drinks were wonderfully flavorful. I just wanted to try them all.
The food was also delicious. As stated, it's modern Italian. In fact crudo translates to Raw in Italian. It's sashimi with an Italian-style flair (think less ginger, more basil and olives.). We tried the butterfish, which I personally enjoyed. We also experienced the crispy pig ears and their burrata. Don't be alarmed by the crispy pig ears. These actually reminded me of pork rinds for those of you from the South and are familiar. If you want a unique and adventurous dining experience with a sexy atmosphere and delicious food, I would definitely recommend crudo.
