Toughest Hike in the Valley! You hike on a moderately difficult trail up to a point where it says it only gets tougher from here, and man does it! You are no longer on a hiking trail, you are now navigating up steep climbs of rock. You often are using your hands so gloves are not a bad idea. Good shoes are a must!! And at least 2 bottles of water per person.
If you make it to the top it is WELL worth the effort. There are a lot of people just hanging out at the top. The views are amazing so take pictures. Also, bring a snack to enjoy at the Top too!! I like to have a big cold Gatorade in my car to look forward when I finish any hike, and believe me if you have one waiting in your car after this hike you will thank me for it!!
As in any hike you do, do it at your own pace. But on no other hike do I recommend more than on this one! Take your time, be safe, and again wear good shoes!
If you really want to challenge yourself go do the Tom's Thumb hike the day after you do this hike. It's 4.4 miles round trip and has some challenging parts. When you make it to the top at Tom's Thumb it'll be very well worth it. On its own the Tom Thumb hike is challenging (not as challenging as Echo Canyon Trail), but if you do it the day after doing the Echo Canyon Trail hike you'll swear it's tougher!! It is a demanding two day hike I named the "Arizona Two-step". Don't make plans the day after you complete the the Two-step cause your body will need a day off!!
Enjoy and be safe!
I'd love to hear people's comments that complete the Arizona Two-step
