  • On May 1st, my baby swallowed a button battery. We went to Banner Thunderbird pediatric ER. They told us it was in his stomach, most likely would not leak so to take him home and watch him for 24 hours or longer but bring him back by 10pm the next night which is 28 hours later an if it is still there they will remove it. I called my doctor and they said rush to Phoenix Children's as you never leave a battery to chance as if it leaks the baby can die or have irreversible damage. PCH removed it first thing in the morning and even the 12 hours it was in his belly caused some burns bc it started to leak. If we had left him 24 hours there were have been horrible maybe terminal damage. I called Banner and told them and they really did not seem to care. This would have been a horrible tragedy if we listened to them and malpractice. I had even called them back on our way to PCH to ask again why we had to wait and they said most of the time it is safe when it is in the stomach so we can wait and see if it passes. I asked what happens in the other cases that are not most of the time and they said horrible damage, but we should be safe. I fear for people who do not question things and listen to people who are supposed to be the experts. Now Banner thinks that they did everything right and are standing behind their decision to charge us. They even said we declined an offer to stay over for observation. We were told "the only people they keep are the ones they think will not return in 24 hours". They expect us to pay $695 even though if we had listened and waited he would have had horrible damage. I think it is awful that we have to pay 2 hospitals and people need to know to question even the experts.
