  • We chose Clayton Family Tile based on the 5 star recommendations on Yelp when we decided to have our floor tiled. We decided to have it done in two stages, the first being the master bedroom, master bathroom, and master closet. The second side being two smaller bedrooms, closets, and a second bathroom. When we met with Mr. Clayton's wife for an estimate we were told the porcelain tile that we chose would look fantastic and was assured the installers would "lay the tile to within the width of a credit card." We even had a sample of the tile to show what we were going to have installed to ensure there would be no issues with the installation. When the time came to have the tile installed, we were sent Mr. Clayton's brother as the installer. While very polite, the installation was not "the width of a credit card" as promised. We understood that the statement "lay the tile within the width of a credit card" should not be taken literally, but what we didn't count on was that once we slid something across the floor, such as our furniture, that it would get caught on the tile. Additionally, we were initially told the job would take approximately a week and it wound up taking two weeks (keep in mind that we had to use our second bedroom and bathroom for an additional week and make other adjustments to our living style). The installer, again while polite, spent as much time talking about juicing, stocks, and everything else under the sun instead of focusing on laying the tile correctly and in a timely manner. His first order of business each morning was to take a dump in our toilet (is there a convenience store where you can stop?)! While we want to be accommodating, this is a bit much! One day my wife saw a lady with a dog on our lawn and was wondering who it was. As it turns out, it was the installer's significant other! There was no prior mention of her showing up and taking liberties to have her dog on our lawn! My wife had no idea who she was! Very unprofessional! Once the tile was laid on that side of the house, it was apparent to the naked eye that there were some areas where the tile was not as smooth as promised. It was brought to the attention of Mr. Clayton and, after suggesting it may be the tile we chose, he assured me that it would be repaired. We ultimately asked to have 3 tiles replaced, but it could (and still can be far more). We felt like there was a limit on the number of tiles we could get replaced. He sent out his "lead" installer and it was determined it could be made better. It was also brought to light that the first installer "had not laid a lot of tile!" So, thanks for sending the "B" team to install tile in my house! At this point, we requested the "lead" installer to install the tile in the other part of the house (we would have requested him the first time had we known this was an option). He was professional and a perfectionist. The difference was remarkable and we used the same tile as the first side of the house. So, the obvious conclusion was it wasn't the type of tile we chose but the person who installed it. Additional items to note: trash was left in our garage at the end of the job, wet saw excess was dumped on our landscaping, and there were no runners laid down from where the tile cutting took place outside to the rooms where they were installed. All communication with Mr. Clayton was done by text and one phone call-I never met him! I was home on a day when Mr. Clayton dropped off some baseboards and he never came in to introduce himself (he had talked to his brother on the phone, so he knew I was there). The improper installation, the trash left in the garage, and the wet saw excess were brought to Mr. Clayton's attention and they were handled, but only AFTER they were brought to his attention. For the money we paid to have half of our house tiled, it is not incumbent upon us to have to follow up on these things. We are pretty disappointed overall with the experience. We would not recommend them or use them again. Two stars is a generous rating.
