| - Why would you steam a bagel?!? Boiled and baked has worked fine for 400 years. Steaming just makes them soggy.
I hate leaving negative reviews, but people need to know what they're getting into. Do not go here expecting a normal bagel. Most places (including the best delis in the world) boil and then bake them. A few places like Owens are experimenting with steaming them instead. Problem is, they come out soggy! Especially if you get one to go, that's sat in foil paper. This is why these places aren't catching on. My order was a simple bagel with egg, and it was a soggy mess. It fell apart while I was eating it, like I was eating lumpy oatmeal with my hands.
I think people's opinions of this place are skewed because it's a hip bohemian-ish atmosphere with writing on concrete walls, old furniture, etc. It's a very Charlotte thing to do. We love our gentrified pretend hole in the wall. But I'm sorry, this place wouldn't last a week somewhere like NYC.
If you want a great bagel, do yourself a favor, and go somewhere like Poppy's. Get a real bagel, prepared properly just as they have been for centuries.
