While visiting Scottsdale from out of town for a medical conference, I wanted to treat myself to a spa day/massage. I decided to come in for a one hour massage and visit the spa amenities the hour prior to my appointment. Before my appt at Joya spa I climbed Camelback Mountain which is a strenuous 3+ hour hike up and down the mountain. It would be an understatement to say that at that moment all I wanted was to relax in the spa environment and have a wonderful massage. The Swedish massage was fine, not great. It kind of seemed like the massage therapist was in a rush the whole time and not really focusing on what she was doing at the moment. She didn't even ask me if I had any special area of focus (let alone any areas of injury or places to avoid). As for the spa amenities, I was only able to enjoy the pool that is a part of joy out of it overlooks Camelback Mountain. I had really wanted to enjoy the hot tub, sauna/steam room, cold shower as a way to unwind from my hike and relax for my massage. Unfortunately there were several rowdy girls in the hot tub talking so loudly that it made it impossible to relax anywhere in the locker room other than the quiet sitting room upfront where you meet your massage therapist. Aren't there rules at spas that you should only whisper and not talk loudly in a group of 8 or 10 girls? I was very shocked and disappointed to find this type of behavior at a high end spa resort. I mentioned it to the employee who was checking me out at the end of my massage and she simply said sorry and offered to give me a free day pass to come visit the spa. When I informed her that unfortunately I wouldn't be able to use a free day pass since I am flying home tomorrow, she just said oh I'm sorry. Obviously none of these things are horrible but it definitely took away from the spa environment that I was expecting and that I paid for. I definitely expected a more peaceful, relaxing, spa experience for $200+. Would not come back again. There are a lot of other spas in the area.
