| - Let's just get this out of the way: I am very aware that Madisonians consider this place a "staple" of downtown, and I frequently hear people rave about their cheese curds and, obviously, their "old fashioneds"; that being said, maybe back in the day this place WAS the "go-to", but with so many options popping up around the square, you can have a more unique, pleasant, less-packed, and potentially cheaper meal somewhere else.
I do not dislike The Old Fashioned. On a weekday it tends to be less busy and a decent place to stop for a drink and a cheeseplate to share amongst friends. In my experience, these are the days you'll have exceptional service, especially from the bartenders (who are usually REALLY friendly, but also REALLY busy on a weekend or during a dinner service, naturally). Their beer selection is great, and they do feature unique drink specials that are worth giving the place a try!
That being said, the menu is not very creative in contrast to many of the restaurants along the square and the food is alright, but not really something to write home about. I would strongly suggest checking this place out for a drink, not so much for dinner.
