  • I wanted to do a custom installation of an OEM navigation/head unit and aftermarket speakers, so I searched the forums and came up with Jeff, at Lockdown Security. I went there and explained what I wanted done and provided him with the factory service manuals for the vehicle. He said that he'd be able to do it but he was leaving for Europe the following week for 6 weeks. He told me that if I waited for him he would make me a priority and cut me a break on the price of the speakers I wanted and the labour. I agreed. 2 months go by and I don't hear anything from him so I send an email asking if he was back yet. He responded a week later and I go in to see him to talk about the install. Now that I've waited 9 weeks for him, he tells me that the install of the OEM navigation is a lot more complicated than he thought and he can't do it. We talk about speaker options as well as installing a rear view camera and I leave with him promising to send me information on my options that day. 3 days go by and I haven't gotten anything so I email to ask him to send me the information so that I can make a decision and get this install done. I receive no response so I call him 2 or 3 days later. He now tells me that he can't reach his distributor for the speakers I want (Focals.) and says he'll try again and get back to me that day. Again 2 or 3 days go by with no response so I call again. Jeff tells me his distributor is no longer affiliated with Focal so he can't get them. In the meantime I've done my own legwork and found a place that sells them so I point the website out to Jeff. He recommends a set of 3 way componant speakers (Focal 165 V33) but tells me to buy direct from the store rather than him trying to work out a dealer price with them. I order the speakers but they'll take 5 business days to arrive. I call Jeff back to tell him the speakers would be here in 5 business days and to ask him for the information on the rear view cameras (which he still hasn't sent me), so that I can make a decision on which one to get, and have him order them in while we wait for the speakers to arrive. The intention is to be able to book an appointment for the install as soon after the speakers arrive as possible. I've now been waiting over 3 months to get this done so I'm anxious to have it booked in. He tells me he'll send the information by email that day. Once again, I hear nothing for a couple of days and send him an email to remind him, to which I get no reply. The speakers arrive and having not heard anything from Jeff, I call him. It's a Friday and I ask him when we can book the install. He tells me he can do it 'as early' as the following Wednesday. I agree and ask him once again to send me the information on the cams so that I can choose which one to get and make a firm booking. This time he sends me a couple of links to cams but there is no information on whether they will integrate into my factory system. I respond to the email within minutes to ask whether the one I've chosen will work and to ask him how much it will cost. Jeff again doesn't bother to respond and on Monday I send another email to ask him about it. Again, no response. There's only one day to choose and order the cam before the supposed install day (which still has been finalised because he hasn't bothered to respond) so I call. This time he's not available and I'm told he's away doing installs. I explain the situation to his partner, Mark, but Mark has no idea about anything and says he'll get Jeff to call me. Jeff, of course doesn't call or email. The next day I call and no one answers so I leave a voicemail for Jeff. Jeff doesn't call or make any attempt at responding. I decide to look elsewhere for an installer and go to talk to them. They take the panel off my door and tell me that the speakers I bought (which Jeff from Lockdown Security recommended after looking at the factory service manuals) will not fit without having to cut into the metal of the door. They can do it, but it will cost a lot of money. He offers to trade me the speakers I bought for a set of Focal KR2 2 way componants if I pay a difference of $340. It would cost much more than that to try to make the V33s fit so even though I've now got to eat the cost of 2 retailers' profit margins so I agree. Let's recap: Jeff Bates, the owner of Lockdown Security, tells me he can do the specialised install I want and will cut me a break on pricing if I wait 7 weeks for him to go on holidays. After he gets back he not only tells me he can't do it, but he's also completely unreliable and unresponsive for 3 more weeks. He has me order the wrong speakers for my car which costs me more money to rectify. We're talking about speakers that cost over $1000. I also now to have to pay full price to have them installed somewhere else. He is unreliable, unprofessional, and unknowledgeable. Do yourself a favour and warn everyone you know away from him.
