| - This rating is for West Elm overall and this specific store.
I love their designs, which is why I keep getting pulled in to giving them another try. However, overall the company engages in a lot of "bait" type sales offers that don't play out like a consumer would expect or want. For example, when browsing their website, it'll say an item is on sale and show a sale price in red. But, when you click on the item, only one color is on sale, and it's usually an odd one, like a hot orange or pungent green. The other colors, the more neutral ones you want are almost never on sale, like the whites, tans, browns, blacks, etc.
Then there's their special "blowout" sales that go awry too, like the time when I showed up in-store at the Scottsdale location to find out that none of the items that showed to be on sale online were marked as being on sale in the store. I asked a sales person why nothing that was on sale was marked and two of them both said "there are too many items to mark, tell us what you're looking for." They can't be bothered to mark the items that are on sale? Or is this just normal practice in the corporation? Either way this is bad mojo.
Yesterday went in again after so many prior disappointments to the "flea" sale, which was small and not worth the drive. Skip these next time they're advertised. All it was was a handful of chairs and nightstands that seemed to have been returns for defects, like a nightstand that wobbled and wasn't level. There was very little there. All they did was open up the door to their back stock room and in a tiny area up front there were a couple of pieces of furniture and a couple of rugs. That's it.
Finally, West Elm engages in the widespread "up to" gimmick that a lot of stores use that borders on bait and switch and gets very tiresome. It'll advertise a big sale and then say "up to" so much off. It means that almost nothing will be marked at the "up to" price and most deductions will be much less.
I also agree with the other reviewer that calls the staff at this location patronizing.
