  • Why 3 stars? Because it has its good and its bad. --- --- --- The more I travel, the more I'm spoiled by my home airport in Tampa. Even though it's currently under construction in some parts, it's still as nice as any airport in the country. There are almost never any lines, it's roomy at every gate and there are phenomenal food options - especially for an airport that is almost never used for a layover. And then we have Phoenix. I'll give them credit for definitely having plenty of food options! In Terminal 4, Blanco Tacos & Wildflower would be good enough even if those were the only too options, but there are plenty of other solid choices. And I'll also add that much like Tampa, the airport is in the center of the city, which makes it nice to land and only be a few minutes away from your destination. But my main grip is the extremely crowded gate area. They tried to squeeze to many gates into a small area, which leads to a giant cluster of humanity when attempting to board. I struggled to even find an empty seat when before the boarding began because there were way too many people in a small space. And there are certainly parts of this airport that look like they haven't been updated since the 80's - especially near the entrance where you see giant, riveted slabs of concrete everywhere. Lastly, if you're in need of a rental car, the shuttle ride is shockingly long. When I say long, I mean that it's about 10 minutes, but I feel like it's usually more like a 2-5 minute ride. When I dropped my car back off, the traffic to return to the airport made the ride even longer. As I said, you could definitely do worse than PHX, but there are some quirks that I hope are addressed during the next series of renovations.
