| - Whenever I'm in the area and I can't think of anywhere else to go, I end up either wandering here, when the sun is still up, or Mill Avenue in Tempe, once it's set.
This region of Scottsdale is stuffed to the gills with tourists (senior citizens, mostly) and the cheesy gift shops to appease them. Most shops and galleries close in the early-to-mid afternoon, it seems.
Honestly, I don't know why I keep coming back here. It's certainly not an interest in "people watching," as some would say to justify going to such places.
During my most recent trip here, I picked up a 99-cent can of Arizona tea at the back of one shop and spent a good 10 minutes trying to get to the counter, navigating around the spring training-watching snow birds who couldn't hear my shy, yet repeated "Excuse me"s.
Most of the shops strive for this one-stop Old West/Mexican culture/Western wear atmosphere. Here's where you can buy "authentic" Native American arrows, cactus-shaped light switch covers, or rusted over door-knockers and hinges for that rustic look on your new McMansion.
