My fiancé and I came in before our show at the Smith Center last night but the food didn't live up to the hype. We started with a crab cake which was delicious but not thoroughly heated. It had salty chunks of crab and a tangy mayo on top that we enjoyed (even more so had it been warmer). I ordered jambalaya and my fiancé ordered the gumbo and I found myself wishing I had ordered the gumbo. The spice level in his dish was perfect and they brought garlic bread to sop up the excellent flavor. My jambalaya was fairly bland which I wasn't expecting at all! The dish was maybe 20 percent chicken and sausage and 80 percent rice. I added hot sauce just to give it some sort of kick and wished someone had talked me into ordering it with shrimp. We finished with Lola's famous bread pudding which was too rich for me but my fiancé loved it. Very dense but too much with the sauce, raisins and candied nuts, in my opinion. We also tried the banana pudding and that was probably my least favorite banana pudding I've ever had. Maybe because it was 7pm on a Friday and it was not the freshest? It was bland with a burnt marshmallow topping and very soggy nilla wafers. I did have some community coffee which was smooth and not bitter at all. I had two cups and a to go cup full as well. We might come back for more gumbo and maybe we'll try the crawpuppies and bananas foster instead.
