  • A little bummed that the whole check-in the line from home didn't work. So I went there. Waited in an hour long line to get my name into the phone system. After that I went home for about four hours and checked the status on my phone. This was on a Saturday so they were super busy. My number was called just a couple of minutes before they closed (make sure you get there before they close...on Saturday this is 4:00) and I saw someone who went through all my paperwork and got me a nevada license and plates. If you are getting plates and a license and this is the first time you've done it from moving here from out of state I suggest that you drive to the inspection station first before you go inside. It only takes a couple of mins and there was no line on Saturday when I went. Also bring a smog inspection. There is a good place around the corner you can get a smog for $7.77 with yelp checkin. It's at USA auto service on ft Apache. Also bring two forms of residency proof. A copy of your insurance card works as proof for one of them. I went to the bank and had them print me out something saying I had a checking account with them and had my address on it too. Just remember the paperwork has to be current for residency proof. Something within the last 60 days. I was changing my name on my old drivers license from my married name back to my maiden name so I also had to bring a copy of my divorce decree showing they were allowing me to go back to my maiden name. I also brought my birth certificate and marriage certificate. I had to change my name over at social security first before going to the dmv. Oh yeah bring your social security card too. Don't forgot when you go you have to take off your old out of state plates off your car. You will have to surrender them to the dmv. They will also punch a hole in your out of state id and give you a paper for your temp new nevada license. You need both your old punched license and the new slip they give you as proof of your identity while you are waiting for your new nevada license to arrive in the snail mail to you. In other words if you want to go out drinking you need to have your old id and that slip for bartenders to let you drink. Also apparently the dmv verifies with your insurance company that your insurance card is valid. It takes them about a week to do that. You can go to the dmv website and check on the nevada live section (I had to search the website for the link)to see your status whether your insurance has been confirmed or not. As I said takes about a week for them to verify it and that's ask done after you leave the dmv. after you are all done with the person then that's when you go and have your picture taken. Then you get to leave. Don't forget to put those new plates on your car and the sticker goes on the top right on the back plate. Make sure you bring the right tools. It really is a cool electronic system they have going on. No more waiting around all day at the dmv. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars. Would have been 5 if I didn't have to go there to get my name in the system. They said they used to allow people to get in line from home but apparently people were doing that then not showing up. Or doing that and showing up and it wasn't fair to the people who got there hours before the dmv open and were waiting outside in the freezing cold and then those people were waiting around for the phone people to get helped first. It was making it so that the dmv was packed with people who don't know the smart thing to do is to look at yelp before you go. They said there would be close to 600 people packed at the dmv waiting around. So they did away with the getting in line from home. You can though make an appointment online. Look at the hint I left. Good luck at the dmv
